Start with what Pixieset does well
A fair comparison should start by recognising that Pixieset is a capable and mature platform.
At the time this guide was updated, Pixieset's official Client Gallery pricing lists 3GB of storage and unlimited galleries on its Free plan. Its paid Client Gallery plans increase storage and introduce features including custom branding, custom domains and full-resolution downloads.
Pixieset also has a much broader photography-business ecosystem than a gallery-only service. If you actively want your gallery platform, portfolio website and studio-management tools under the same umbrella, that breadth is a genuine advantage.

The best Pixieset alternative depends on what you actually want to change. Pixieset remains a strong photography platform, so the useful question is not simply which service is better. It is which platform best matches your gallery delivery, proofing, sales, storage and wider business workflow.
Here are some of the main alternatives photographers are likely to compare in 2026.
FolioDen: best for a gallery-first photography workflow
FolioDen focuses on the part of the workflow that happens after the shoot: branded client galleries, proofing and favourites, controlled downloads, photo sales and client delivery. It suits photographers who already have their preferred website, booking or accounting tools and want the gallery experience itself to stay simple.
Pic-Time: strong for gallery sales and marketing automation
Pic-Time combines client galleries with a print store, worldwide lab connections, album tools and marketing automation. Its higher plans add larger or unlimited storage and additional gallery and marketing features. It is particularly worth comparing if automated print marketing is a major part of your business.
ShootProof: strong for galleries plus studio-management tools
ShootProof combines client galleries with booking, invoicing, e-sign contracts, digital download controls and professional print-lab fulfilment. Its plans are primarily organised around the number of photos you need to store, with commission-free sales across its offering.

SmugMug: strong for photographers who prioritise storage
SmugMug places much more emphasis on long-term photo hosting. Its paid plans include unlimited full-resolution JPEG storage alongside gallery delivery, privacy controls and Lightroom integration. Portfolio and Pro tiers add selling, storefront and additional client tools.
CloudSpot: strong for galleries with an integrated studio suite
CloudSpot offers both gallery-only and broader studio-management plans. Depending on the plan, photographers can combine client galleries with contracts, questionnaires, project management, print sales and other business tools. This makes it more relevant when replacing several separate services is the goal.
Pixpa: strong when your photography website is part of the decision
Pixpa takes a website-first approach. Its platform combines portfolio websites with client galleries, proofing, favourites and comments, secure image delivery and options to sell prints or digital downloads. It therefore makes more sense for photographers who want to replace their website as well as their gallery service.
Where FolioDen takes a different approach
FolioDen is deliberately gallery-first.
The aim is to make the journey from finished edit to client delivery straightforward: create a gallery, upload the work, present it properly, allow the client to view and interact with it, and support proofing, downloads and sales without turning that process into another piece of complicated studio administration.
That means FolioDen and Pixieset overlap in several areas, but they are not trying to be identical products.
1. Gallery-first platform versus wider business suite
This is probably the biggest philosophical difference.
Pixieset has developed into a suite of products that can cover large parts of a photography business. That can be valuable when you want those systems connected.
FolioDen concentrates much more heavily on the gallery itself and what happens around it: private client galleries, public art galleries, proofing, favourites, downloads, branding, digital sales and gallery marketing tools.
If you already have a website, accounting system, booking workflow and other tools you are happy with, you may not need your gallery platform to replace all of them.
If you want one wider ecosystem, Pixieset may be the stronger fit. If you want the gallery side of the workflow to remain more focused, FolioDen may make more sense.
2. Compare storage based on the work you actually deliver
Storage limits matter, but headline numbers do not tell the entire story.
FolioDen currently provides 5GB on the free Launch account, 100GB on Pro Studio and unlimited storage on Elite Creative.
Pixieset currently starts its Client Gallery Free plan at 3GB, then increases storage significantly through its paid tiers.
Rather than choosing whichever service displays the largest number, look at the size of your real galleries. A wedding photographer delivering hundreds of full-resolution JPEGs has very different requirements from a headshot photographer sending ten final photographs from each job.
Consider how many active galleries you normally keep online, how long they remain available and whether your gallery service is acting as delivery software or as a permanent archive.
3. Sales commission matters if clients buy through your galleries
If you intend to sell through a gallery, commission deserves proper attention.
Pixieset currently applies a 15% Pixieset commission to Store orders on its Free Client Gallery account. Upgraded Client Gallery and Suite plans have 0% Pixieset commission.
FolioDen follows a similar principle. The free Launch account currently carries a 15% FolioDen commission on gallery sales, while Pro Studio and Elite Creative remove FolioDen commission.
That means photographers who generate regular gallery sales should calculate the subscription cost against the commission they expect to pay rather than looking only at the monthly price.
4. Think about the whole client journey
A gallery is not successful simply because photographs can be uploaded to it.
From the client's point of view, the useful questions are much simpler:
- Where are my photographs?
- Can I find everything easily on my phone?
- Do I need a password?
- Can I choose favourites?
- Where do I download the final files?
- Can I share the gallery?
- Can I buy something if I want to?
A platform that answers those questions clearly is often more valuable than one with dozens of additional tools the photographer never uses.

Upload the type and quantity of photographs you normally deliver. Open it on your phone. Send the link to somebody who has never used the system. Ask them to find a photograph, choose a favourite and work out how they would download it.
That five-minute exercise tells you more about a gallery platform than a page containing fifty feature names.
