That also means a photographer looking for a SmugMug alternative should first decide which part of SmugMug they are actually trying to replace.

SmugMug's biggest strength: unlimited JPEG storage
Storage is probably the clearest structural difference between SmugMug and many gallery platforms.
SmugMug currently includes unlimited full-resolution JPEG storage across Direct, Portfolio and Pro.
For a high-volume wedding, sports, event or school photographer keeping years of galleries online, that can be extremely valuable.
If you have 20TB of finished JPEGs and want the platform to become a major part of your long-term archive, SmugMug deserves serious consideration.

SmugMug's Portfolio and Pro plans allow photographers to sell prints and digital downloads through galleries.
Photographers can create pricelists, choose products and set the prices clients see.
SmugMug's current support documentation states that the photographer receives 85% of the markup above SmugMug's base price or download cost, with SmugMug retaining 15%.
That retained percentage covers areas including card processing, customer support and administration of the selling system.
SmugMug also provides integrated lab fulfilment, meaning physical products can be produced and delivered without the photographer manually handling each order.
This is a genuine strength if print fulfilment is an important part of your business.
How FolioDen sales differ
FolioDen also supports gallery sales, but its plan model is different.
Launch allows photographers to start free and currently carries a 15% FolioDen commission on gallery sales.
Pro Studio and Elite Creative remove FolioDen sales commission.
So when comparing selling costs, do not look only at monthly subscriptions.
Estimate:

- the typical profit on those orders;

Depending on plan and location, photographers can work with supported labs while SmugMug handles much of the ordering process.
If your business relies heavily on automated print fulfilment, that should carry significant weight in the decision.
FolioDen should not be chosen simply because it is newer or simpler if SmugMug already solves a complex fulfilment requirement that your business depends on.
Privacy and long-term archiving
SmugMug's combination of privacy tools and unlimited JPEG storage also makes it attractive to photographers treating their online account partly as a long-term archive.

Do not migrate your whole archive first
If you are seriously considering moving away from SmugMug, do not begin by transferring several years of work.

- Test favourites if you use proofing.
