Comparing photography gallery platform pricing is harder than comparing two monthly subscription figures. Different providers bundle storage, sales, proofing, websites and business tools in different ways, which means the cheapest headline plan is not always the cheapest platform for the way you work.
A better comparison starts with your own workload and then calculates what each provider would cost at that level.
Compare equivalent plans rather than the cheapest plans
A common mistake is comparing one platform's free plan with another platform's professional tier and then deciding one is dramatically cheaper. Those plans may be designed for completely different users.
Instead, identify the features you genuinely require and find the lowest tier on each platform that provides all of them. That gives you a much fairer starting point.
Put annual subscription cost in one column
Convert monthly and annual billing into a single annual figure. If annual billing receives a discount, note that separately so you understand whether the saving requires paying for a full year upfront.
Do not stop there. Subscription cost is only the first column in the comparison.
Add the cost of the storage you actually need
Estimate how much photography you expect to keep online rather than simply choosing the biggest advertised allowance.
A wedding photographer delivering many large galleries may move through storage tiers quickly. A commercial photographer delivering small curated sets may be able to remain on a modest allowance for much longer.
FolioDen currently structures this as 5GB on Launch, 100GB on Pro and unlimited photo storage on Elite.
Calculate gallery sales commission
If your galleries make sales, platform commission can become more important than the subscription itself. Estimate your likely annual gallery revenue and apply the relevant commission percentage before comparing plans.
A free plan with commission may still be the best value for a photographer who makes few additional gallery sales. For somebody generating significant event, art or school-photo revenue, a paid plan without platform commission may work out cheaper overall.
FolioDen's free Launch plan currently includes FolioDen commission on gallery sales, while Pro and Elite remove FolioDen's sales commission.
Keep payment-processing fees separate
Payment processing and the gallery provider's own commission are not always the same thing. When examining a provider's pricing, identify which charge belongs to the gallery platform and which belongs to the payment processor.
This helps avoid comparing a platform fee on one service with a payment-processing fee on another.
List paid features you know you will need
Brand removal, additional users, proofing, larger downloads, custom domains or marketing features may sit on different tiers depending on the service.
Write down each feature that is essential to your business and make sure the plan you are pricing actually includes it.
Consider the value of tools the platform replaces
A more expensive gallery service may still save money if it replaces another system you currently pay for. Conversely, an all-in-one photography platform provides poor value if you already have separate tools you prefer and never use most of the bundled features.
The calculation should therefore include both new costs and subscriptions you could genuinely cancel.
Separate affordability from pricing mechanics
This guide is about how to calculate the price. Our affordable online gallery platform guide looks at the broader question of value, including when free accounts make sense and when upgrading can actually save money.
Keeping those two questions separate prevents two articles from trying to rank for exactly the same search intent.
Use a simple comparison worksheet
For each platform, record:
- annual subscription cost at the tier you actually need;
- included storage and the likely upgrade tier;
- platform sales commission;
- important paid add-ons;
- branding or custom-domain requirements;
- any other software the platform genuinely replaces.
Then calculate an estimated first-year cost and a realistic cost once your business reaches the next stage.
Do not ignore switching costs
Moving platform may involve rebuilding galleries, updating client links, learning a new interface and changing parts of your delivery process. That does not mean you should remain with an expensive system indefinitely, but switching time has value.
A lower subscription only produces a saving if the platform is still efficient enough for you and your clients.
Where FolioDen fits into a pricing comparison
FolioDen currently lets photographers begin on Launch free forever, with unlimited galleries and 5GB of photo storage. Pro increases storage to 100GB and Elite provides unlimited storage. Paid FolioDen plans remove FolioDen's gallery-sales commission, while Elite includes custom-domain support.
That means the appropriate FolioDen tier depends on storage, sales and branding requirements rather than simply whether you are a professional photographer.

Compare photography gallery platforms
Pricing is only one part of choosing an online photography gallery. Storage, proofing, downloads, sales tools and branding all affect the value a platform provides.
